Spreadsheets are excellent for exploration and terrible as the system of record for controls. Yet many leakage programs quietly promote a workbook into the role of policy: formulas become thresholds, tabs become owners, and the person who understands VLOOKUP becomes a single point of failure.
Signals you have crossed the line
New joiners cannot reconstruct last quarter’s exceptions. Version filenames include “final_final2.” Materiality changes happen in a cell with no ticket. Partner disputes reference “the sheet” instead of a published control narrative.
What to keep in sheets
Ad-hoc analysis, scenario comparisons, and draft memos. Export results into a governed register — whether that is a financial auditing app, a GRC tool, or a well-permissioned database with audit logging.
